Sarah Olowofoyeku is a student and Head Girl at Bromley High School. She is the Kent Regional winner of the National Slambassadors competition organised by the BBC and The Poetry Society. The video included on the Poetry Channel is one of her winning performances.
Sarah says:
‘As a winner of a national poetry competition organized by BBC Blast and The Poetry Society, for which I had to enter a 1 minute video clip of myself performing a poem I had written on the theme of identity, I won a two day Masterclass at The Poetry Society in Covent Garden. The Masterclass was led by Joelle Taylor, a renowned Slam poet who helped me and the 5 other winners to improve our writing skills and be able to draw inspiration from unusual places (one activity being ‘stalking’ which was a walk through Covent Garden looking at people, shops and our surroundings). On day two, we met Benjamin Zephaniah, a wonderfully inspirational poet who shared his life story with us and gave us advice for our future as poets. We worked on our performances for the afternoon’s showcase at Rich Mix in Shoreditch where we each had a 10 minute slot to perform for friends, family and eminent figures in the poetry world. I performed three poems, ‘Please Mind The Gap’ - the poem I won with, ‘Mr BNP’ and ‘Vanity Fair’ - which I wrote while ‘stalking’ in Covent Garden, as well as a collaborative piece all the winners and Joelle had written the day before. Benjamin Zephaniah performed as well as Scroobius Pip, a well-known spoken word artist and they were both amazing. It was a jam-packed weekend and such an enjoyable experience that I’d do it all over again without a second thought!’
Scroobius Pip was similarly impressed, tweeting: ‘Slambassadors final tonight. Was amazing. Sarah Olowofoyeku was my highlight. EVERYONE was awesome tho!’
